The “why” question is as ancient as human thought. As soon as individuals and societies posited an account of meaningfulness, they were forced to account for absurdity. And so Epicurus asked the question that often is associated with the idea of theodicy, a question that was stated within modernity by David Hume: “Is [God] willing to prevent evil, but not able? then is he impotent. Is he able, but not willing? then is he malevolent. Is he both able and willing?
